Welcome to Courageous Leadership with Travis Yates, where leaders find the insights, advice and encouragement they need to lead courageously.

00:00:11.941 --> 00:00:13.506
Welcome back to the show.

00:00:13.506 --> 00:00:18.000
I'm so honored you've decided to spend a few minutes with us here today.

00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:28.716
And once again we're in Eureka, Nevada, for day three of the Leadership Conference by the Eureka County Sheriff's Department.

00:00:28.716 --> 00:00:43.152
Day three Sheriff Wayne Ivey, I've got Roland Klee here to talk about that day and once again, if you don't know who Roland is, I'm not telling you, roll that podcast back and listen to that phenomenal podcast that just came out a few days ago.

00:00:43.152 --> 00:00:45.307
Roland, how was your impressions of day three?

00:00:46.381 --> 00:00:48.628
Today was a great day for the conference.

00:00:48.628 --> 00:00:53.411
It was a full day with Sheriff Wayne Ivey of Brevard County, Florida.

00:00:53.411 --> 00:00:55.828
He's been sheriff down there since 2013.

00:00:55.828 --> 00:01:00.231
And he gave his presentation on leadership from the ledge.

00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:18.073
Yeah, and it was a really interesting, dynamic day because the first part of the day we've got really some generic leadership lessons, lots of great quotes talking about great leaders from the past, and then it led into the literally the last part of the day, which was social media management and how important that is for leaders.

00:01:18.073 --> 00:01:20.117
So what's your impressions on that?

00:01:20.117 --> 00:01:21.787
Roland, obviously you're down there in Florida.

00:01:21.787 --> 00:01:25.225
You knew Sheriff Ivey before today, but the the real deal, right.

00:01:25.966 --> 00:01:30.674
He's the real deal and his perspectives on social media were right on.

00:01:30.674 --> 00:01:32.947
And they're really engaged in the social media.

00:01:32.947 --> 00:01:37.463
He says that social media is the new community policing, and he's right about that.

00:01:37.945 --> 00:01:42.822
Yeah, what was interesting to me was is he's able to do that with very limited staff.

00:01:42.822 --> 00:01:45.150
I believe he has one person that helps him manage that.

00:01:45.150 --> 00:01:55.971
He does all the posting himself, so it's his language, so to speak, and it just goes to show you you don't have to have a big team of people, you just need to have an intent and a will to do it right.

00:01:56.641 --> 00:01:59.891
He really keeps the information on a tight leash there.

00:01:59.891 --> 00:02:10.655
He makes sure that he reviews everything that's public-facing, he goes through it and even if somebody provides him with some content, he goes through and he edits it until it sounds like him.

00:02:11.254 --> 00:02:17.578
Yeah, a huge component in courageous leadership overall, which is communicate to eliminate any misperceptions.

00:02:17.578 --> 00:02:21.487
Make sure you tell your own story, don't let the media write that story for you.

00:02:21.487 --> 00:02:23.883
And really, sheriff Ivey brought that home, did he not?

00:02:24.144 --> 00:02:24.725
He sure did.

00:02:24.725 --> 00:02:28.412
And the programming that he puts on he even mentioned.

00:02:28.412 --> 00:02:36.546
You know it looks good, looks fancy, but a lot of it's done just with the cell phone.

00:02:36.546 --> 00:02:37.251
It's done on a shoestring budget.

00:02:37.251 --> 00:02:47.581
The main budget expense that he was mentioning was the automatic archive tool, which has to do with Florida public records laws, and you know that one expense he manages to do that, he gets his people to do it.

00:02:47.581 --> 00:02:59.520
He has a crime analyst assigned directly to the office of sheriff so they're able to create those bulletins like the ones about people who lost the game of hide and seek the fugitives.

00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:09.675
So he really does a very good, lighthearted, most of the time approach to these things that's very engaging to the citizens of Brevard County.

00:03:09.860 --> 00:03:14.472
Yeah, and I think if you didn't recognize who Sheriff Al is, you've probably seen him on social media.

00:03:14.472 --> 00:03:16.868
He's got a couple of these games he does where he wheels.

00:03:16.868 --> 00:03:19.348
It's like a wheel of fortune and it lands on a criminal.

00:03:19.520 --> 00:03:23.126
It's like a wheel of misfortune for fugitives, yeah, so you've got to check that out.

00:03:23.126 --> 00:03:28.754
It's all over YouTube and Facebook and it really it keeps you engaged in that while you're also learning.

00:03:28.754 --> 00:03:35.699
So I thought it was a great mixture of leadership principles and how leaders can apply that to the communication aspect.

00:03:35.699 --> 00:03:38.368
And Sheriff Ivey's in a unique position.

00:03:38.368 --> 00:03:41.306
He's not answering to a mayor, he's not answering to city council.

00:03:41.306 --> 00:03:44.968
He understands the important role of communicating to the public.

00:03:44.968 --> 00:03:51.468
What crime is he talked about lowering crime rates all throughout the day and he doesn't have to worry about the nonsense, so to speak.

00:03:51.468 --> 00:03:59.514
And I think a lot of our municipal chiefs who sort of play politics could probably learn a lot from an actual politician that doesn't seem to be playing politics.

00:04:00.219 --> 00:04:04.991
Yeah, a lot of them depend on their city hall for their paycheck.

00:04:04.991 --> 00:04:06.506
Their paycheck's threatened with everything.

00:04:06.506 --> 00:04:13.471
He's elected by the people, he's accountable to the people and he uses that freedom for all it's worth.

00:04:14.100 --> 00:04:26.822
Yeah, I've said this time and time again Sheriff's departments are the last bastion of law enforcement, because they're still doing law enforcement, because they're not worried about these outside influences, and we all can learn something from that.

00:04:26.822 --> 00:04:28.487
So day three wrap up.

00:04:28.487 --> 00:04:33.990
Roland clee, thank you so much again, my pleasure and if you're listening, thank you for listening.
