00:00:02.044 --> 00:00:10.429
Welcome to Courageous Leadership with Travis Yates, where leaders find the insights, advice and encouragement they need to lead courageously.

00:00:11.441 --> 00:00:13.327
Welcome back to the show.

00:00:13.327 --> 00:00:22.850
I'm so honored you're going to spend a few minutes with me here today, and a few minutes is just about all I'm going to take up from your time.

00:00:22.850 --> 00:00:36.220
And last week I gave an interview to Alpha News it's a pretty large news organization based out of Minneapolis and of course we had Minneapolis police.

00:00:36.220 --> 00:00:42.548
Officer Mitchell was ambushed and gunned down, I believe earlier last week.

00:00:42.548 --> 00:00:45.491
They actually buried him today.

00:00:45.491 --> 00:00:59.048
And this interview kind of came on the heels of that, because I have a little bit of a background with not necessarily the police department, but some of the politicians in Minneapolis.

00:00:59.107 --> 00:01:18.966
Several years ago Mayor Fry, who's still the mayor, made this outlandish statement that he was banning all warrior training because he did not approve of any training that taught officers that everybody's a threat and of course it was ridiculous that training doesn't exist.

00:01:18.966 --> 00:01:22.271
This whole idea of warrior and guardian is ridiculous.

00:01:22.271 --> 00:01:31.706
It's a word game that's being played, and so that's sort of how the interview started, with a little background on that, because obviously today Minneapolis is much more dangerous.

00:01:31.706 --> 00:01:36.486
Obviously, today officers that work there are in a much more dangerous environment.

00:01:36.486 --> 00:01:40.587
There's mandatory overtime because their staffing is so low.

00:01:40.587 --> 00:01:52.111
And when I say staffing is low, minneapolis is really the poster child for what really will occur when leaders completely abandon their responsibilities as leaders.

00:01:52.111 --> 00:01:56.027
They are funded for, I believe, a little over 800.

00:01:56.027 --> 00:02:02.965
They are below 500 as I speak and they will be probably plummeting to around 400 in no time.

00:02:02.965 --> 00:02:10.407
That department I've been watching it closely is on the brink of absolute total destruction and bankruptcy.

00:02:10.407 --> 00:02:20.454
It's quite possible, if they don't change their ways there, that department will one day cease to exist or will consist of so few officers.

00:02:20.454 --> 00:02:24.328
They're not really functional as a law enforcement agency.

00:02:25.230 --> 00:02:30.298
And I'm going to sort of let that interview come out and let me answer a lot of those questions that I talked about.

00:02:30.298 --> 00:02:49.527
But there was one particular question that was an interesting question and I wanted to sort of talk to you about that question because it's something I hadn't really thought of and I thought it was a very good question and and so I answered it to Liz Collin, who did the interview.

00:02:49.527 --> 00:03:11.873
But I want to, I want to sort of talk to you about it because I think it could apply to some of you, and what she asked me was specifically was is it even possible for Minneapolis to return to a sense of normalcy when it comes to safety for the community and police officers, she says is that even really a realistic conversation to have?

00:03:11.873 --> 00:03:16.012
And man, oh man, what an interesting question.

00:03:16.012 --> 00:03:27.614
Like, is it even possible that they could return to the Minneapolis that we once knew, which was a really great city, right, I grew up watching the Twins and Kirby Puckett and nobody would think twice about going to Minneapolis.

00:03:27.614 --> 00:03:29.961
And no one's going to Minneapolis today.

00:03:29.961 --> 00:03:40.901
And of course, that interview is going to go into a lot of details on that, including the two consent decrees they have not one but two and a myriad of other issues that they have going on.

00:03:40.901 --> 00:03:48.473
But that kind of came towards the end of the interview and I want to sort of line that answer out for you and discuss it with you.

00:03:48.473 --> 00:03:56.189
I'd love to hear your comments, I'd love to get your feedback on that, but I'm actually not sure it's realistic.

00:03:56.189 --> 00:04:04.782
But in a sense I'm an optimist and here's why Everything bad that's occurred in Minneapolis has occurred because of leadership.

00:04:05.223 --> 00:04:08.072
It's that simple, it doesn't get any more complicated than that.

00:04:08.072 --> 00:04:23.980
It's been a series of really bad decisions made by leaders in that community, not only within the police department but within city government, and so if that's how they got there and that's how they got in the mess they're in Now.

00:04:23.980 --> 00:04:26.730
By the way, everyone outside Minneapolis knows they're in a mess.

00:04:26.730 --> 00:04:33.531
Now, if you listen to the Minneapolis local news and you listen to the political leaders in Minneapolis, they act like this place is Disneyland.

00:04:33.531 --> 00:04:34.553
It clearly is not.

00:04:34.553 --> 00:04:41.026
There's a couple of Twitter pages you can follow that just gives you line by line of the crimes going on in real time.

00:04:41.026 --> 00:04:52.125
It's pretty horrendous and really really sad and unfortunate for that community that their leaders have let them down, and so it does seem a little outlandish to say that they could come back from this.

00:04:52.125 --> 00:05:10.632
But see, because leadership is responsible for everything bad, leadership is also responsible for everything good, and that's why I can be an optimist about whether it's Minneapolis or any other place, and so I sort of gave a list to Liz on what they needed to immediately do.

00:05:10.632 --> 00:05:20.011
Now, I'm not advocating that they would actually listen to me or do this, but if you're trying to answer the question, could they ever return to normalcy?

00:05:20.011 --> 00:05:24.779
Could they ever return to safety in a community that's thriving?

00:05:24.779 --> 00:05:27.100
I think they have to listen to this.

00:05:27.161 --> 00:05:37.423
So number one is they have to tell the truth, and not only tell the truth going forward, but confessing the lies from the past.

00:05:37.423 --> 00:05:52.857
There is A number of items that that leadership in Minneapolis has lied to, not only their citizens but to America, and says vocal and I'll let that full interview for me to go into what those lies are.

00:05:52.857 --> 00:05:57.937
If you've watched the fall of Minneapolis and you've listened to other things going on, you know those lies.

00:05:57.937 --> 00:06:04.247
There have been horrendous lies that have impacted not only Minneapolis but also impacted the rest of the country, impacted not only Minneapolis but also impacted the rest of the country.

00:06:04.247 --> 00:06:11.451
As vocal as those leaders told those lies, they have to be just as vocal in repentance.

00:06:11.451 --> 00:06:14.392
They have to apologize that they lied.

00:06:14.392 --> 00:06:19.035
Now, obviously that's going to be a hard stop for many of these horrible leaders.

00:06:19.035 --> 00:06:22.576
But it's not leadership if you don't tell the truth.

00:06:22.576 --> 00:06:24.798
It's not leadership if you don't own up to mistakes.

00:06:24.798 --> 00:06:30.800
It only gets worse and that's sort of the downward spiral that Minneapolis is in.

00:06:31.420 --> 00:06:32.401
Why is that important?

00:06:32.401 --> 00:06:35.723
Because it sends a message to the men and women behind the badge.

00:06:35.723 --> 00:06:40.345
It sends a message to the community that wants to be safe.

00:06:40.345 --> 00:06:41.065
Accountability matters.

00:06:41.065 --> 00:06:42.148
Number two.

00:06:42.148 --> 00:06:46.858
That begins showing support for the men and women behind the badge.

00:06:46.858 --> 00:06:48.867
Once you tell them the truth starts that.

00:06:48.867 --> 00:06:56.232
But they must vocally show support to the men and women of the Minneapolis Police Department Folks.

00:06:56.232 --> 00:07:08.812
They've been doing business surveys for decades on why people stay at their job, why people are happy at their job, why people work hard at their job, and it always comes down to support from their leaders.

00:07:08.812 --> 00:07:14.596
We all think in law enforcement we need to have the highest pay, you need to have the best benefits, we need to give you a signing bonus.

00:07:14.596 --> 00:07:15.346
None of that stuff.

00:07:15.346 --> 00:07:16.970
That stuff may be important to a few.

00:07:16.970 --> 00:07:26.879
By and large, all the research tells us you will work and you will be happy and you will do what you can at your job when you feel like you are being supported.

00:07:27.605 --> 00:07:30.855
And everyone knows that Minneapolis does not support law enforcement.

00:07:30.855 --> 00:07:31.737
They know the leaders don't.

00:07:31.737 --> 00:07:36.252
That's why their recruiting is in a crisis and people will say, oh, that's because of George Floyd.

00:07:36.252 --> 00:07:36.954
No, it's not.

00:07:36.954 --> 00:07:38.410
It's not at all.

00:07:38.410 --> 00:07:39.846
You can turn.

00:07:39.846 --> 00:07:48.240
Of course they didn't support the men and women behind the badge during George Floyd because they blamed an entire profession based on that.

00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:52.074
But that's not why they're having problems today.

00:07:52.074 --> 00:07:53.992
That may have been part of the problem.

00:07:53.992 --> 00:07:57.735
Today, as it continues forward, they're still losing people in Minneapolis.

00:07:57.735 --> 00:08:03.815
They're still dwindling as a police department, you must show support for the men and women behind the badge.

00:08:04.286 --> 00:08:05.350
So I want to kind of give us to.

00:08:05.350 --> 00:08:07.213
This may not just apply to Minneapolis.

00:08:07.213 --> 00:08:17.637
Some of you may work in communities that may not be as high profile as Minneapolis, but it may be just as important to listen to some of these things we're discussing here.

00:08:17.637 --> 00:08:19.511
Number one tell the truth.

00:08:19.511 --> 00:08:21.190
Number two show support.

00:08:21.190 --> 00:08:22.790
Doesn't seem crazy, does it?

00:08:22.790 --> 00:08:24.584
Kind of seems like leadership 101.

00:08:24.584 --> 00:08:27.490
Unfortunately, we have to talk about leadership 101.

00:08:27.490 --> 00:08:35.173
Number three, then you must empower law enforcement to do what they do best go after criminals Folks.

00:08:35.173 --> 00:08:37.866
No one knows this better than law enforcement.

00:08:37.866 --> 00:08:46.448
I love it when I hear all of the new programs and the new theories and the new technology and we're going to do this now, we're going to do that now.

00:08:46.448 --> 00:08:51.346
Well, the last I checked, we reduced part one crimes to record lows in the 90s.

00:08:51.346 --> 00:08:52.250
How did we do that?

00:08:52.250 --> 00:08:57.669
Didn't have technology, didn't have programs, didn't have all these feel-good pledges that we love to sign.

00:08:57.669 --> 00:09:01.337
Nope, we just went after the criminal element.

00:09:01.337 --> 00:09:06.505
And if you don't get back to that, the criminal element will not disappear.

00:09:06.505 --> 00:09:10.615
There will remain a very unsafe element in your community.

00:09:11.476 --> 00:09:15.572
And then, fourthly, when controversy arrives and controversy will arrive.

00:09:15.572 --> 00:09:18.087
Folks, we work in a business of controversy.

00:09:18.087 --> 00:09:20.615
That's why lawyers circle the drain around law enforcement.

00:09:20.615 --> 00:09:23.328
They know at any given minute something's going to happen.

00:09:23.328 --> 00:09:27.035
We could be completely in the right, but it's going to be deemed controversial.

00:09:27.035 --> 00:09:29.326
It's going to bring outrage right.

00:09:29.326 --> 00:09:37.405
And so when that controversy arrives and it will in Minneapolis as it will in your city leaders need to simply tell the truth.

00:09:37.405 --> 00:09:37.787
It's that simple.

00:09:37.787 --> 00:09:39.648
If the officers were right and people are outraged, they're going to be in the right.

00:09:39.648 --> 00:09:44.655
If the officers were right and people are outraged, discuss why officers are right.

00:09:44.655 --> 00:09:49.280
If officers are wrong and people are outraged, then discuss that they're wrong and hold them accountable.

00:09:49.280 --> 00:09:51.730
It really is that simple Just tell the truth.

00:09:52.712 --> 00:09:58.623
And this seems to be very uneasy to many officers on the streets.

00:09:58.623 --> 00:09:59.690
I speak to a lot of them.

00:09:59.690 --> 00:10:00.673
I speak to you weekly.

00:10:00.673 --> 00:10:09.254
You're more scared of doing your job right and being destroyed than doing your job wrong, because, by and large, you control whether you do it wrong.

00:10:09.254 --> 00:10:16.677
What you don't control is when you do it right and you are destroyed for doing it right.

00:10:16.677 --> 00:10:22.178
And we all can think of specific examples of people we know and people in the news where this has happened.

00:10:22.178 --> 00:10:37.080
It just happened to a state trooper in Minneapolis where not only do the experts say the use of force was justified, but chain of command said it was justified and the district attorney went after him and while they ended up dropping charges, his life was forever altered.

00:10:37.080 --> 00:10:39.852
We all know that, and so we are.

00:10:39.852 --> 00:10:44.923
When your officers are more scared of that, doing their job right and being destroyed.

00:10:44.923 --> 00:10:48.700
I don't think any profession more or less than Minneapolis Police Department recovers from that.

00:10:48.700 --> 00:10:50.245
And so that is.

00:10:50.245 --> 00:10:53.493
You have to make that decision before the controversy.

00:10:53.493 --> 00:11:00.735
If you wait for controversy and knee jerk, you're going to probably make a wrong move, and, man, we've seen that a lot.

00:11:00.816 --> 00:11:05.152
Fifthly, minneapolis and I keep coming back to this they need truth tellers.

00:11:05.152 --> 00:11:13.725
If they can get there, if they can get there, if they can just start telling the truth, that would be the beginning of a change.

00:11:13.725 --> 00:11:19.783
Isn't it odd that all of this kind of just comes down to leaders telling the truth?

00:11:19.783 --> 00:11:26.419
You know that's the foundation of leadership, is integrity, ethics, truth-telling.

00:11:26.419 --> 00:11:28.744
I mean, everyone would expect that right.

00:11:28.744 --> 00:11:40.381
But we live in this weird day and age where the truth seems to be missing or something else is proposed to be the truth or it's just pure deception.

00:11:41.163 --> 00:11:43.792
Just today I watched President Biden's remarks.

00:11:43.792 --> 00:11:46.940
He was at a gun control convention.

00:11:46.940 --> 00:11:55.193
I don't know what it was called, but he was given a speech on gun control, which is odd, considering it's the same day his son was convicted of a felony and a gun charge.

00:11:55.193 --> 00:11:58.282
And this isn't a political statement, it's just a lie.

00:11:58.282 --> 00:12:06.836
He got up there and he said that under his administration, violent crime was reduced to record lows in the last 50 years.

00:12:06.836 --> 00:12:08.660
Now, folks, that's a flat-out lie.

00:12:08.710 --> 00:12:10.476
I've written about this on Substack.

00:12:10.476 --> 00:12:12.758
You can find that at CourageousPoliceLeadershipcom.

00:12:12.758 --> 00:12:17.682
Actually, go to TravisYatesorg and it will branch you over there on articles.

00:12:17.682 --> 00:12:19.014
That's a complete lie.

00:12:19.014 --> 00:12:21.956
He's using FBI crime data.

00:12:21.956 --> 00:12:23.822
That's about 42%.

00:12:23.822 --> 00:12:26.490
43% agencies didn't report the crime.

00:12:26.490 --> 00:12:30.294
So he's citing data and you know I go into details in the article.

00:12:30.294 --> 00:12:34.812
They converted, they went over to NIBRS and a lot of departments couldn't participate.

00:12:34.812 --> 00:12:54.119
The FBI, you know, very seldom gets a lot of things right, but the fact is we don't actually know how much crime is going on in America because the main reporting mechanism is completely fractured and no one seems to care, because it's a political year and they like to say that we're at record lows and anyone with a brain knows that isn't true.

00:12:54.119 --> 00:12:59.918
But when the leader of the free world says that to the world, that should be insulting to everybody.

00:12:59.918 --> 00:13:01.557
Right, and that's what's going on in Minneapolis.

00:13:02.711 --> 00:13:19.586
Some lies are more deceiving than others, but that was a complete lie and everyone knows that, and I actually pulled the data out in the article because in 2020, we had full data Ninety-eight percent of the departments participated, and now it's in the low 60 percentile of agencies that are participating.

00:13:19.586 --> 00:13:19.846
I don't know.

00:13:19.846 --> 00:13:24.322
Agencies like Los Angeles and New York City don't even put their crime data in.

00:13:24.322 --> 00:13:26.232
So I mean, yeah, that affects violent crime.

00:13:26.232 --> 00:13:27.053
Don't even put their crime data in.

00:13:27.053 --> 00:13:27.975
So I mean, yeah, that affects violent crime.

00:13:27.995 --> 00:13:33.364
But when leaders lie, the whole foundation of what they try to do fails.

00:13:33.364 --> 00:13:39.113
There's nothing after that you're going to be able to do to recover.

00:13:39.113 --> 00:13:48.797
And so Minneapolis, just like your agency and your city and my community and everywhere else, the truth matters, and we've lost our way in this.

00:13:48.797 --> 00:13:53.575
It's very odd to me, because that used to be just a given.

00:13:53.575 --> 00:14:02.985
You knew that real leadership was about integrity and telling the truth, and now it seems to be that the truth is the last thing being said.

00:14:02.985 --> 00:14:07.971
I don't know whether that's cancel culture, where, when you say the truth and people don't like it, you're going to get attacked.

00:14:07.971 --> 00:14:09.918
So you try to say things that people like to hear.

00:14:09.918 --> 00:14:11.432
That's obviously what's gone on in Minneapolis.

00:14:11.432 --> 00:14:14.841
I mean, they changed their tune with the wind over there.

00:14:14.841 --> 00:14:25.320
But if we don't get back to that regardless if you're in Minneapolis or any other community if we don't get back to the truth and honesty, nothing will ever get better.

00:14:25.379 --> 00:14:27.965
And that was really my summary of Minneapolis.

00:14:27.965 --> 00:14:29.596
That sounds awful simple.

00:14:29.596 --> 00:14:38.102
Really, if they would just tell the truth and support cops and let cops do their job, it would recover 100%, 100%.

00:14:38.102 --> 00:14:49.154
But I'm not sure that's in the cards, man, I got a lot of good friends that work in and around the Minneapolis area and everything you hear about them is true and more.

00:14:49.154 --> 00:14:53.442
All the chaos you see on television is true and more.

00:14:53.442 --> 00:14:55.634
There's so much that's not being said to you.

00:14:55.634 --> 00:14:57.418
My heart breaks for them.

00:14:57.418 --> 00:15:03.471
My prayers go out to their fallen that they just buried today.

00:15:03.471 --> 00:15:17.844
There's nothing pleasing about talking about these things, but woe is us if we let leaders get away with what they've gotten away with, because it does real, real damage.

00:15:17.844 --> 00:15:22.822
Thank you for listening and just remember lead on and stay courageous.
